A Fistful of Fergies

At the end of May I'll be heading to Birmingham, Alabama, to watch the Birmingham Barons host the Tennessee Smokies in the 18th Annual Rickwood Classic. This will be played at Rickwood Field, America's oldest baseball park. Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins will be the guest of honor and will be signing autographs.

So, I need to know which card(s) to bring for Mr. Jenkins to sign.

I popped over to COMC and snagged five card images that appeal to me.  Although Fergie played with the Phillies, the Red Sox, and the Rangers, I always viewed him as a Cub.

Maybe I should ask him to sign one card from each of the clubs he played with.
Maybe I should ask him to sign one card from each of the club with which he played.  Darn grammar gremlins.

So, a poll has been put up on the sidebar.  Help guide me.  Or if you think there's a better one to be signed, let me know in the comments.

  1. That '84 Fleer is just begging to be signed. Look at all that white space.

  2. Those are all nice. Did you consider the 1983 Topps?

    1. For some reason I overlooked that. A good suggestion and possibly a very good contender but I won't be changing the poll.

  3. I'm partial to the Past Time Pennants set in general. A nice bright Cubbie Blue sig would look good on it.

Hard to make a bad choice there, though. You could just bring four friends and get them all signed then decide.

  4. Have fun at the Classic. I've been every year for the past five or so (I live in Bham).

Don't forget that fans are allowed onto the field after the game. Seeing the old scoreboard up close is worth the heat.

Speaking of heat, stick with the cheap GA seats if you like shade. The box seats are right up next to the field, but they are also out from under the overhang and exposed to the midday sun.

Also, the Barons are opening a brand new stadium (Regions Field) this year as well. They have night games the day before and after the Classic. Make it a 2-day, 2-stadium trip and take in some Birmingham sites while you're here.

    1. Thanks for the info. It will be a one day trip. I'm headed down there with some guys from church. I took a tour there are few years back at the SABR Jerry Malloy (Negro Leagues) Conference. I loved it.

I enjoyed Birmingham, from what I saw of it.

Will you be at the Classic? Blogger meetup?
