Some sports cards from Listia

I've been 'selling' some cards on Listia, mostly duplicate 1971 Topps.  I've been turning around and bidding on some cards that I want.  I won this disinterested Reggie Jackson for 3,580 credits.  The seller tossed in the ticked off Andre Dawson.  Reggie filled a hole in my quest to complete the 1971 Topps Series 1 (obligatory wantlist link).

Jeff Burton has moved from the drivers' seat to the broadcast booth. But my wife still likes him.  I bid on this lot and won for 503 credits.  I didn't even look to see if I need them.  As it turns out, I needed all three of them (obligatory wantlist link, part two).

I picked these cards, and more, up from a Listia auction some time back.   I'm too lazy to look up when or how many credits it cost me.

Yesterday was my wife's birthday.  To celebrate I'm going to show a Jeff Burton auto card that I won on Listia.

The corner is a bit chipped.  And the copy on the back is horrid.

NASCAR is never the seas of tranquility and the search for food is never easy.  Especially for a young shark, like Jeff Burton, who's trying to grow big enough so that one day he can hunt those who once hunted him.  Burton sharpened his skulker skills in 1996 to a point.  A taste of victory will not elude him much longer.

What?  Skulker skills?  I want to learn those.  The copy is true.  Burton got his first NASCAR win in 1997 at the Texas Motor Speedway.

I didn't realize that it was an autographed card.  Apparently neither did the seller.  I have Jeff Burton's rookie card (a 1991 Maxx).  I have a Jeff Burton memorabilia card (2001 Press Pass Premium - Hot Treads). Trifecta complete.

2008 Wheels High Gear Jeff Burton

Raz, over at The Raz Card Blog, was talking about spacing out his NASCAR-themed posts over the next month so as not to chase away both of his readers.  In support of Raz, I'm going to post some Jeff Burton cards.  Night Owl be darned.

I picked these up on Listia a few weeks back.  499 credits brought all four of them to my mailbox.

NASCAR drivers, unlike MLB players, can compete in multiple series.  Jeff Burton was racing in the Nationwide series and in the Sprint Cup series.  What a horrid color.  I should have used this card in a St. Patrick's Day tribute post.

You'd think that this card would be part of an insert set, wouldn't you?  But it isn't.  Main set, just a grouping of cards with a similar theme.  Carmeleons.  Get it?  Like chameleons, they change colors.  Well, paint schemes.  Get a program.  Can't tell your drivers without a program.

Another insert?  Nope.  They do have insert sets, just not this one.  It takes more than a driver to compete.  Jeff's pit crew hard at work.  I wonder if they ever say, "Would you like fries with that?"

A serial numbered Jeff Burton card. From this season. Could it be his last season? Of full time racing, I think that is a yes.

I read somewhere or other that collecting on a budget could easily be accomplished by picking up the second year card and the final year card of your favorite player.  The second year card will have stats from his rookie season.  The final year card will have his total career.  Not a bad thought, but anymore half the cards don't have (m)any stats at all.

I've just recently completed compiling a spreadsheet of known Jeff Burton cards.  I've listed 2,065 cards.  I need to double check a few things before releasing it.  I know that it is a work in progress and there are probably about 100 cards or more that I've missed.

Now I need to organize the cards I have and put them in the correct pages by year and check them off the spreadsheet.  Yeah, that won't take any time at all.   I've got about 350 cards, I estimate.

So what have I learned?  That I won't be a completing the Jeff Burton catalog.  Let's say I have 1,800 more cards to go.  I'm not going to be spending that kind of money on his cards.  I'll continue to pick them up on Listia, in dime boxes, and in trade, but I think I'm done chasing the cards.

Here are a few more cards that I picked up through listia.com.  They're probably from a few different auction lots and I'm not going to go back and check to see how many credits I spent on them.  I'm too lazy to post more than a few times a month.  You think I'm going to dig around some auction archive to see how much they went for?

Notice the bottom portion of the following card.  The edge where the card slipped down in the wrapper just before it went to the wrapper sealing part of the packaging process.  I've got a nice 1/1 embossed card.

The FordRacing.com card is a puzzler.  You can see that it was perforated, probably part of a set of six cards.  Jeff got his 16th career win in 2001 at Charlotte.  He logged his 242d start at Loudon in 2001.  13 races later he picked up his 17th win (at Phoenix).  So, the cards must have come out in 2001.

Okay, I was curious.  We'll call it 511 net listia credits were spent to get these three cards.

• The Hi-Tech card went for 80 credits.
• The Scoreboard card went for 76 credits for a five card lot.  15 credits for this card.  I have't relisted the other four misc. NASCAR cards in this lot.
• The FordRacing.com card was one of six.  555 credits.  130 for this card.  But, I relilsted the five cards I wasn't interested in.  They went for 200 credits, thereby increasing my cost on the Burton card to 355 credits.

Playing with cars

Here are some Jeff Burton collectible vehicles.  Since they all cost about a dollar each, I wasn't so concerned about the packaging being crisp and perfect.

I don't know if one would consider them to be New In Box or Mint In Box.  I'd probably go for NIB.

I don't know all of the scales, nor do I really want to.  I am aware that there is a whole other segment of collectors that goes gaga over the larger models.  Take a look at the NASCAR.com Superstore Jeff Burton Diecast page.

One of the problems that I see as a collector of stuff is that there are too many products.  Yes, in baseball cards we have all of the rainbow parallels.  And if you're a jersey collector, there's the home, road, throwback, special edition, etc.  Sometimes in NASCAR they have a different paint scheme every week.  Or a different major sponsor.  And some fool company is producing cars for each of them.  In multiple sizes and finishes.

I've resolved that I don't need to collect the cars, in or out of their packages.  I just don't.  I will, though.  But that is not the focus of my Jeff Burton collection.  Sort of like I didn't need to buy the 7" Hershiser plate.  Or the Earl Wilson commemorative Snuggie.  Okay, just kidding.  It wasn't Earl Wilson, it was Carl Erskine.

For now I'm going to leave them encased in their plastic cocoons and try to get the cards from listia or elsewhere, but some day I might break them out and play with them.

More Listia Wins

I've been a busy boy on Listia. I picked up a few more cards. Not all of them sports related. The first, my first Jeff Burton relic card, set me back 2,242 credits. Maybe a bit too much, but I have them to burn right now.

The rubber relic looks like it was punched out of a tire slice and then hot glued on top of the card.  No thickening of the card here to even it out.  Cut, glue, plop.

The second card is a tobacco card. From Great Britain in the late 1930s. I liked the look of it.  I've never been to England but I'd like to visit Rye.  It also sounds like a sandwich.  "Yeah, I'll have a rye on sussex.  Hold the mayo."  This fine card set me back 907 credits.
