Cards from Marvin

Marvin, over at Trade Bait - The Great Chase!, sent me an envelope the other day. The main purpose of it was to include the "Where is Cliff Lee today?" card. He also included two packs of cards for my daughter, Caroline.

We've got some Nintendogs.

And we've got some Littlest Pet Shop. To me, all the LPS pets look the same. I couldn't tell the butterfly from the basset hound. Really.

Caroline likes puppies.

Here's a modified pack break...

The video was taken with my BlackBerry, so the quality is not great (read: a bit grainy). I wouldn't suggest that you make the video screen size larger.

So, here's Cliff Lee today. I'll be putting him in a package that should go out on Friday. Cliff, it has been nice knowing you.

Marvin, thanks. It is a pleasure to know you.

Pack Break Video

This is my first attempt at a video pack break.

About two weeks ago, Greg, that Owl of the Night, posted three Albuquerque Dukes cards. Debus. Dugas. And Bustabad.

dayf commented:
I'll give the first person to post a YouTube video of them saying "Debus, Dugas and Bustabad" ten times fast while ripping a pack of 1991 Fleer a relic, auto, numbered insert and vintage card from their favorite baseball team.

I am dead serious about this.
I'm taking him up on his offer.

I don't know what the whir-whir sound is. Sorry about that. And this is a lot harder than it looks. I practiced on a pack of 1987 Topps and a pack of 1992 Upper Deck.

Note: pack break videos will not become a staple of this blog. I'm sorry that you won't be getting 2:45 minutes of your life back.

dayf, we'll talk.

Here's a pack break from the 1992 Topps Stadium Club, Series 1.

Mark Lee - 32
Mike Boddicker - 39
Jimmy Jones - 53

Roger Clemens - 80
Jaime Navarro - 87

Rafael Belliard - 105
Dave Eiland - 133
Walt Terrell - 139
John Candelaria - 164

Terry Shumpert - 165

Harold Reynolds - 181
Dave Henderson - 218
Teddy Higuera - 208

Ron Tingley - 233
Jimmy Key - 259

This year Topps introduced the BARS diagrams. No, not where the players hang out.

System
Now, how does this look on the cards? Well, it looks a lot better when the BARS people actually have some stats.

More stats are better.

I need more data.

There we go.

Oh yeah. Pitchers.

One of the nice things about this set is that the cards feature the player's first Topps card on the back. Of the 15 cards in this pack only two of them are posed shots. The action photography is crisp, focusing on the player and leaving the background nice and blurry. The front of the pack says that the cards are "Produced with Kodak Imaging Technology." There are 900 cards in this set. Too many for me.

1989 Bowman Wax Pack Break

This pack is one of the ones that my dad had sent my way. Topps revived the Bowman name in 1989 after purchasing them in 1955. They are a mix of action shots and posed shots. The posers seem to be more abundant than their counterparts.
484 cards in the set, with a handful of rookies, including Ken Griffey Jr., Gary Sheffield and Steve Finley. But not in this pack.
There are some established players, such as Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs. They weren't in this pack, either.
Probably the funnest card was a reproduction Gil Hodges sweepstakes card. Topps was giving away a complete set of 1953 color Bowman Baseball Cards, along with other individual cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Entries must be recieved by March 10, 1990.

In the words of Maxwell Smart, "Missed it by that much."

Cards pulled from this pack are:

10 - Randy Milligan
59 - Melido Perez
73 - Charles Nagy (rookie card)
123 - Kevin Seitzer
129 - Teddy Higuera
147 - Fred Toliver
167 - Dave Righetti
187 - Rick Honeycutt
327 - Alan Ashby (pictured above)
400 - Dickie Thon
435 - Tony Pena (pictured above)
465 - Kelly Downs

And a broken piece of gum.
