November Collect Auctions Catalog

Time for another auction catalog post.  This showed up in my mailbox a few weeks back.

Yeah, I'm a little late.  I didn't read the cover very closely.  Bidding ended on the 29th.  I thought that the auction started on the 29th.  Let's see what caught my eyes.

Title: 1914 B18 Ty Cobb Blanket
Lot #: 36
Description: This 1914 B18 Blanket features Ty Cobb is the White Infield version. It has a small hole on the bases above Cobb's head and a light stain behind Cobb's legs, but is otherwise in very nice condition.
Minimum Bid: $75
Closing Bid: $132.21
My Thoughts: A blanket from 98 years ago?  With Ty Cobb?  Why wouldn't somebody want this?

Title: Arthur Conan Doyle Signed Letter with Amazing Content (1926) (PSA/DNA)
Lot #: 383
Description: This ALS is written and signed by "A. Conan Doyle" on Feb. 2, 1926. The one-page (5.25x7) note is written to F.M. Sands of Maryland and reads, "You are very wise to stick to any faith which makes you a better man. It is one the latter point that we are judged. When you enter the other world you will find that no one worries about what you believed. But what your character is decides your position there." There is a horizontal crease and a light vertical crease, which runs through his signature and one line of text and faint mirroring of a few words, but otherwise in fine condition. Accompanined by the original mailing envelope postmarked Feb. 2, 1926. The famed author was obsessed with spiritualism and attempted to find proof of existence beyond the grave, with this letter profoundly outlining some of his beliefs of "the other world." Great historical piece with significant content, with the signature authenticated by PSA/DNA with full LOA.
Minimum Bid: $600
Closing Bid: - (Reserve not met)
My Thoughts: A letter from the creator of the world's greatest detective.  Worth whatever the reserve was?  I don't know, but it would be cool to own.

Title: Tony Stewart Signed 1998 Small Solders Die-Cast Car (PSA/DNA)
Lot #: 764
Description: This Small Solders logo die-cast Tony Stewart 1:24 scale car has been signed by Stewart on the hood. The black felt tip pen signature has been authenticated by PSA/DNA with a basic LOA. The car is a 1998 Pontiac is from an edition of 10,992.
Minimum Bid: $50
Closing Bid: $0
My Thoughts: Although I like NASCAR, I'm not really into car models, signed or not.  My brother is a Tony Stewart fan.  I'd pick this up for him.  Looking back at the bidding, I should have.  Maybe it would have sold had the auction house labeled it with the correct sponsor, Small Soldiers.  Small Solders sounds like a transistor radio.

1993 Leland's Auction Catalog

I was at Central Street Books (facebook link) in KnoxVegas and found this gem for a dollar. The proprietor, wanting to clear cruft out of his shop, sold it for fifty cents. A winner is me.

There are quite a few uniforms, signed balls, even Pete Rose's Rolls Royce.  Say that three times fast.

I like the Ruth poster and the mechanical bank.

One of the things that I like about this catalog is the way that the group photos were taken. Sure, I only give you one example.

How did it turn out?  Here are some newspaper articles describing the auction results.

Beaver County Times - February 21, 1993

The Sunday Gazette - February 21, 1993

Ah, to have lived in the early 1990s with a boatload of cash.  I could be driving a Silver Wraith now.

Collect Auctions - August Catalog

Another CollectAuctions.com auction catalog showed up in my mailbox last week.  I selected a few non-sports items that would be fun to own.  As usual, I'm not bidding on these, just having nice day dreams.

Why not go with the sports items?  Although there are some very nice items offered, I found myself going back to my standards: Vintage, Negro Leagues, a bit of hockey.  Since the ladies over at Dinged Corners recently posted about pop culture, I thought I'd go that direction.  Welcome back, Patricia and Lucy.

Let me show you what I'd bid on if I had some spare cash and had a place to display them...

Title: James Caan Signed 8x10 Framed Photo
Lot #: 897
Description: This framed and matted 8x10 photo features James Caan and is signed in blue felt tip pen. It arrives with a nameplate below with Caan's name and "Rollerball" and the signature is pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
Minimum Bid: $50
Current Bid: $0
My Thoughts: James Caan.  Many might know him from his acting in Brian's Song, The Godfather, Misery, or Elf, I first saw him in Rollerball, one of my favorite sci-fi movies.  I think that he first defined bada** for me.  No, I haven't seen the Rollerball remake.  James Caan is still making movies.

Title: Pete Best Signed Guitar - Original Beatles Drummer
Lot #: 455
Description: This Squier Fender mini red and white guitar is signed by former Beatles drummer, Pete Best. Best has inscribed his signature with "The Beatles" next to it in black felt tip pen. The signature is pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
Minimum Bid: $100
Current Bid: $100
My Thoughts: I'm currently reading Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now by Barry Miles.  I didn't really follow the Beatles, but I remember when Hey, Jude was released in 1968 and also remember the Yellow Submarine rub on stickers that came with some cereal.  I just never got into them.  The book is interesting, especially with the early history of the group.  Sort of sad that Best got sacked just two years into the gig.  He's currently playing in Europe.

Title: Fay Wray Signed 8x10 "King Kong" Photo
Lot #: 891
Description: A signed 8x10 photo of Fay Wray is available in this lot. The photo shows Wray in King Kong's clutches and is signed in black felt tip pen. The photo arrives in very fine condition and the signature is pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
Minimum Bid: $50
Current Bid: $0
My Thoughts: I saw King Kong in 1978.  Not on television, but projected onto a large screen.  Amazing what film makers could do in 1933.  Fay Wray died in 2004.  She's not signing any more.  A steal at this price.

2012 REA Catalog

Time for another look at an auction catalog.  This time it the annual door stop, hernia inducing tome from Robert Edward Auctions.  A few weeks ago I requested a catalog from them and it showed up last week.  The catalog weighs in at about five pounds and is over 750 pages in length.  I've spent countless breakfasts poring over this fantastic work, trying to narrow down the the hundreds of items to just three that I want to showcase.  I stayed focused on baseball and then broadened that to whatever humored me at the moment.  I left behind many signatures, many bats and ball and uniforms.

This is what caught my eye...

Title: 1888 N154 Duke Presidential Base Ball Club Card Collection (3)
Lot #: 87
Description: Collection of three cards (two different) from this rare nineteenth-century baseball-related nonsport tobacco-card set. Catalogued N154 and issued by Duke & Sons, the Presidential B.B. Club set is similar in dimensions (4.25 x 2.25 inches), design, and rarity to Kalamazoo Bats, but instead of ballplayers, they feature large ("Heads-Up" style) photographic portraits of the presidential candidates of 1888, Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland, comically superimposed on baseball-player bodies, posed in various baseball scenes with very elaborate studio stadium backdrops. For this rare set, three cards is an uncommonly large group. Two cards are in Vg-Ex condition; one card is in Fair condition. Total: 3 cards.
Starting Bid: $200
Current Bid: $700
My Thoughts: Who can't pass up old timey baseball cards with big headed presidents?  I wasn't at all familiar with this set.  According to Old Cardboard, there are 19 confirmed cards that were issued.  If I was an advanced collector (read "wealthy") I'd be all over these.

Title:Rare 1938 "Light Bulb" Brooklyn Dodgers Ticket Stub from Johnny Vander Meer's Second Consecutive No-Hitter - 1st Night Game in Brooklyn Dodgers' New Home
Lot #: 1073
Description: Exceedingly rare "Lower Stand" ticket stub, featuring a unique "light bulb" die-cut design, issued for the first night game at Ebbets Field on June 15, 1938, which was highlighted by Johnny Vander Meer's second consecutive no hitter. On June 15, 1938, a season-high 38,748 fans crammed into Brooklyn's Ebbets Field for a chance to witness history (the stadium officially held 32,000). Little did they realize how historic that night would be. The draw was not the game between the Dodgers and the visiting Reds, but the novelty of watching them play at night. Up until that time, only the Cincinnati Reds had played regular-season major league games came at night (the first night game took place in 1935). Now, the Dodgers, under the direction of general manager Larry MacPhail, were about to enjoy the benefits that lights first brought to Cincinnati: a threefold increase in average attendance. The game was the first of seven scheduled night games for the Dodgers that season and a circus-like atmosphere greeted the throng of fans who turned out that night, including two marching bands and a sprinting contest between Olympic gold-medal winner Jesse Owens and various players (all of whom received head starts, of course). The opposing pitcher that night for the Reds was Johnny Vander Meer, who just four days earlier had no-hit Boston in Cincinnati. Vander Meer was also about to reap another one of the benefits brought about by night baseball, for pitchers at least: the batter's difficulty in seeing the baseball. Under the newly installed lights, Vander Meer made baseball history by pitching his second consecutive no hitter, a feat never accomplished before or since. To say the fans received their money's worth that night is an understatement, and all who were present probably never forgot the moment. Despite the overflow attendance and historic nature of the game, ticket stubs from that game are exceedingly rare and the offered example is the first we have ever handled. The unique die-cut design features an illustration of a baseball sitting atop a light bulb that reads "Night Game." The number "1," in red, appears in the center of the bulb. Although the ticket displays no date or year, the red number "1" denotes the first night game of the season, with the Lower Stand tickets for the other six night games that year displaying the corresponding numbers "2," "3," etc. Aside from three punch stamps, the ticket (2 x 3.5 inches) remains in Near Mint condition.
Starting Bid: $300
Current Bid: $1,700
My Thoughts: Whenever I see the terms Dodgers and Night Game my mind turns to the Night Owl.  Ah, to have been at that game.  This is why I save all my ticket stubs.

Title: Tommy McDonald Original Baseball Artwork Collection (20 Original Oil Paintings)
Lot #:1127
Description: Collection of twenty original oil-on-board baseball paintings by renowned portrait artist and football Hall of Famer Tommy McDonald, each signed by the artist. This is a very unusual offering of an archive of original paintings (which are usually offered individually but in this case are being offered as a collection of twenty paintings exactly as they have survived) with an unusual provenance. All of these paintings were commissioned by the Equitable Life Insurance Company during the 1980s for unspecified purposes (most likely promotional). After the project was completed, the company chose to discard the paintings rather than incur the cost of storage. Luckily, they were rescued from that fate by our consignor, a former Equitable Life employee, who was given permission to take them away and keep them if he wished, and they have remained in his sole possession since that time. Each painting pictures a bust-length image of a single player, each of whom is pictured in uniform. Nineteen different players are represented here, with only Hubie Brooks pictured twice (in one he is pictured as a New York Met and in the other as a member of the Montreal Expos). Three of the paintings measure 12.25 x 15.25 inches (Bedrosian, Gantner, and one unidentified player), while the remaining seventeen paintings measure 12.75 x 16 inches. All of the paintings have been framed to slightly larger dimensions (either approximately 15.75 x 18.34 inches for the smaller paintings and approximately 18.75 x 22 inches for the larger ones). The players represented here are Steve Bedrosian, Jim Gantner, Tom Glavin, Joaquin Andujar, George Bell, Jeff Ballard, Bob Knepper, Kevin Brown, Rafael Palmeiro, Hubie Brooks (two different paintings), B. J. Surhoff, Luis Leal, Kevin McReynolds, Orel Hershiser, Joe Carter, Ken Caminitti (as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team), and three others (unidentified; two are pictured as members of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team, and the other as a member of the San Diego Padres). Tommy McDonald began his career as a portrait artist after meeting a fan who presented him with a painting of himself. McDonald was quoted at the time as saying, "Of all the watches and the plaques and trophies that you get, this is a little more unique." This is how the seed was planted for McDonald to pursue portrait painting after his retirement from professional football. McDonald has painted portraits of many professional athletes over the years. He has also been commissioned to produce portraits of Heisman Trophy winners for New York's Downtown Athletic Club, football All-Americans for the University of Oklahoma, and first-year participants in Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. This is an outstanding collection of original Tommy McDonald baseball artworks featuring many of the top players from the late 1980s/early 1990s, including a few potential Hall of Famers. All of the paintings are in Near Mint condition. Total: 20 paintings.
Starting Bid: $1,000
Current Bid: $0
My Thoughts: Purchasing these and hanging them in the hallways of my palatial estate would lend some sense of "ooh and aah".  I don't often see portraits of Orel Hershiser.  At $50 per painting, I think it would be a good investment.  Heck, you could cut them up and make relic cards.

No, I'm not going to be bidding on these lots, or any others.  I just like to dream.

Collection Auctions Auction Catalog

This nice catalog was waiting for me in my mailbox yesterday afternoon.  Bidding started on Monday and will wrap up on April 12.  Visit Collect Auctions to join the fun.

As is the custom in my auctions posts, I find a few lots that I'd like to own.  I don't bid on them, just day dream.

Title: 1934 R310 Butterfinger Complete Set (66)
Lot #: 18
Description: R310 1934 Butterfinger complete sets are much scarcer than many collectors realize. Sets rarely come up for sale, A great value, with almost 30% HOFers, this is another very attractive 1930s oversize issue. Condition ranges from Poor to Ex-Mt, with some very clean examples of some of the better HOFers. The cards tend to have nice images, but tape reinforcing a tear on the reverse, or border chipping keeps the technical grades very low, but not the eye appeal as a rule. The key cards grade as follows: 1 Averill GVG, 5 Bottomly (Bottomley) VG+, 10 Cochrane Fair-Good, 12 Cronin Ex, 14 Dizzy Dean Ex, 16 Dickey VG, 17 Durocher Fair-Good, 19 Ferrell VG-Ex, 21.1 Fox (name incorrect) Good, 21.2 Foxx (name correct) Ex-Mt, 23 Frisch VG-Ex, 24 Lou Gehrig Good, 25 Gehringer VG-Ex, 26 Gomez Ex-Mt, 28 Grove Ex-Mt, 30 Hafey VG-Ex, 31 Harris Ex+, 34 Hornsby VG+ mounted paper, 35 Hoyt GVG, 36 WalterJohnson EX, 41 Manush Ex+, 49 Ott GVG (w/advertising on cardboard), 52 Ruffing VG-Ex, 53 Babe Ruth GVG, 55 Simmons Ex+, 59 Vance VG, 61 L. Waner Ex+ and 62 P. Waner VG-Ex. Has both Jimmy Foxx Variations, so the set is complete at 66 cards.
Opening Price: $400
Current Price: $0
My Thoughts: These are nice looking photos.  The cards measure 7-3/4" x 9-3/4".  A nice set of players from the mid thirties.  Sort of a cross between a slightly bigger Turkey Red and the photos of the Goudey Wide Pens.  I'm not quite sure how I'd display them, though.

Title: Negro League Legends Multi-Signed Display with Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige (PSA/DNA)
Lot #: 210
Description: This matted display features five monster names in African-American baseball history, led by Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige. Each player is pictured with a cut signature also included near their photo. The Robinson signature is really nice in blue steel tip pen, along with Paige in blue steel tip pen on a lined index card. Other signatures include: James "Cool Papa" Bell, Judy Johnson and Walter Buck Leonard. All signatures are authenticated by PSA/DNA with a full letter of authenticity.
Opening Price: $200
Current Price: $220
My Thoughts: I'd probably remove the matting and make five individual pieces.  You can't get a better selection of players' signatures.

Title: 1961-62 Fleer Basketball Set and Wrapper (66)
Lot #: 342
Description: Fleer’s inaugural basketball issue is offered here in highly collectible condition, Ex to Ex-Mt, with good centering in an issue often troubled by same and a solid, consistent overall look. Perhaps a half dozen of the cards edge past Ex-Mt to Near-Mint; a similar number show centering difficulties that would typically be enough to warrant an off-center qualifier in the highest grades. Eight singles have been graded by SGC, including No. 8 Wilt Chamberlain SGC 3, No. 10 Bob Cousy SGC 5, No. 22 KC Jones SGC 5, No. 36 Oscar Robertson SGC 4, No. 38 Bill Russell SGC 5, No. 43 Jerry West SGC 5, No. 44 Len Wilkens SGC 6 and No. 62 Bill Russell (Takes to the Air) SGC 4. The breakdown: 1 Attles Very Good, 3 Baylor Very Good, 23 Jones Good, 35 Ramsay (signed), 46 Baylor In Action Nr-Mt o/c, 47 Chamberlain In Action Ex m/c, 49 Cousy In Action Ex, 61 Robertson In Action Very Good, and 66 West In Action Ex. The wrapper fits in nicely at; Ex-Mt.
Opening Price: $400
Current Price: $783
My Thoughts: These are the cards that were produced celebrating the basketball season the year that I was born.  I like the simple design and the players shown here?  Wow.  The mascots just give the cards that extra something special.

I probably need to contact the auction houses because I haven't been getting many catalogs lately.

Greg Bussineau Auction Catalog review - late

At the end of June I heard about an upcoming Greg Bussineau Sports Rarities auction. I wasn't familiar with this auction house so I contacted them and requested a catalog. It arrived very quickly and was filled with such nice items that I was stunned.

They say that the three rules of serious collecting are quality, quality, and quality. This auction offered all three. Most of the 588 lots shown in the 112 page catalog are graded cards and sets. Not just any graded cards, but several are the highest graded cards known. Quality sometimes equals high prices.

The auction ran from June 30th to July 21st.  I wasn't planning on bidding and GBSR knew that.  But, time slipped by and my intentions for an auction preview went with it.

So, I'll offer a look back at three items that interested me.

Title: 1933 Goudey #119 Rogers Hornsby PSA NM-MT 8
Lot #: 147
Description: One of two cards featuring Hall-of-Fame legend Rogers Hornsby within the 1933 Goudey set. Hornsby was one of the finest players in Major League baseball history. His list of notable accomplishments is almost endless. Two that really stick out, his lifetime batting average of .358 is the second highest (behind Ty Cobb) in baseball history, and he was one of only two players (along with Ted Williams) to win two hitting Triple Crown Awards.
This is one of the most attractive cards in the '33 Goudey set. It features an amazing horizontal image of Hornsby leaning over to field a ball. The offered example is nicely centered with crisp vibrant artwork, great print quality, and a flawless surface.
Minimum Bid: $1,500
Closing Bid: $3,600
My Thoughts: I've enjoyed the 1933 Goudey set and Rogers Hornsby.  I don't know that I've researched them enough to have ever noticed the horizontal image on the vertical layout. Or vice versa.

Title: 1967 Philadelphia #35 Gale Sayers PSA MINT 9
Lot #: 545
Description: The great Gale Sayers' second card. This example has beautiful yellow borders, four perfect corners, and absolutely pristine image and surface quality. Tied for the finest known PSA graded copy.
Minimum Bid: $300
Closing Bid: $540
My Thoughts: It is Gale Sayers.  What isn't to like?  The card is crisp and the pose is fantastic.  This, boys and girls, is what a football player looks like.

Title:  1970-71 Topps #3 Bobby Orr PSA GEM MT 10
Lot #: 580
Description:  This is the one and only example of Bruins Hall-of-Fame great Bobby Orr's 1970-71 Topps card to be graded GEM MT 10 by PSA. The card is an absolutely perfect gem. Dead-on centering, blazing sharp corners, bright snow-white borders, and brilliant orange background color.
The 1970-71 season was a sensational one for Orr. He set the all-time record for most points scored by a defenseman (139), a record he still holds today. He won his second Hart Memorial Trophy, and his fourth Norris Memorial Trophy. And for the fourth year in a row, he was named a first team NHL All Star.
A unique opportunity to acquire the best of the best.
Minimum Bid: $1,000
Closing Bid: $7,500
My Thoughts: With the oppressive heat that has been slamming the nation I decided to turn to something cool.  What's cooler than a hockey card?  A Gen Mint 10 Bobby Orr hockey card.  I rooted for the Bruins during the time that this card was manufactured.  I don't know that I ever collected hockey cards in my youth, but I'd like to have this one now.

Sorry that I didn't get this post completed before the auction ended, but Greg Bussineau Sports Rarities will be hosting their 2011 Fall Auction in November.  I promise to do a better job next time.

Huggins & Scott March Auction Catalog

Time for another auction post.  The latest Huggins & Scott auction will be in full swing next week.  The catalog arrived and I've had a chance to peruse it and select a few items that interest me.

Title: Large Collection of Ephemera with Ashburn Concentration
Lot #: 37
Description: Presented are multiple large containers filled with newspapers, magazines, pamphlets and miscellaneous ephemera with most having a connection to the Philadelphia Phillies and Richie Ashburn. More than a hundred 1960s and 1960s newspapers, including Sporting News, are present with each issue having an article or image of Whitey Ashburn. There are large format magazine such as Look, Life, Boys Life and the Saturday Evening Post – all featuring Ashburn in some way. Other highlights include a 1964 Cooperstown yearbook, a Dick Perez Baseball Masterpiece book (incredible artwork on the interior pages), various Phillies team photos, and an unused 1993 Phillies appointment book. There are sure to be treasures unearthed in this lot, so an in-house review is strongly encouraged. The overall weight of the lot is several hundred pounds, and freight shipping or local pick-up is required.
Opening Price: $100
Current Price: $0
My Thoughts: It is ephemera. Why wouldn't I like it? It seems that a Richie Ashburn collector that is parting with his collection.  Although if I purchased it I would feel like I'd be sure to end up on a Hoarding: Buried Alive episode.

Title: 1954 Willie Mays "Say Hey!" Baseball Game in Original Box With All Pieces
Lot #: 62
Description: While the origin of Willie Mays’ “Say Hey” moniker is not quite definitive, it caught on fast and stuck. The offered novelty attests to Mays’ immense popularity at an early stage in his career. Marketed by Oliver Toys in 1954, this Willie Mays “Say Hey!” Baseball game pays homage to the Harlem great. In its original cardboard box (VG with creases and separation at the upper left corner), the game is complete with all of its original parts.
Opening Price: $100
Current Price: $150
My Thoughts: I like old baseball games. I don't know that I'd like to play it, but board games intrigue me.

Title: 1934 Schutter-Johnson/Canadian Chewing Gum “Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis” Near Set (46/50)
Lot #: 363
Description: Presented is a 1934 Schutter-Johnson/Canadian Chewing Gum “Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis” near set of (46/50) cards. Missing only #12, 19, 24 and 38 for completion. Both versions of #34 are present.
Opening Price: $400

My Thoughts: Cow skulls, flying boys in white summer clothing, Lothar the Pterodactyl, a robot baseball team, a Lou Zocchi GameScience d36, pith helmets.  What's not to like?

Collect.com Auction Catalog - December, 2010

I received this catalog in the mail last Thursday.  The day that the auction was to end.  Not a whole lot of time to promote it.  Then I got an email saying that due to printing and shipping issues, the auction closing would be delayed for for a week.  So, head on over to Collect.com and bid, bid, bid.

If you are into signed items, then this is the auction for you.  License plates, balls, cards.  You name it, they're offering it up.

Normally I would pick a theme or items that I'd like to have in my collection.  Not this time.  There are many nice cards and objects in the catalog but nothing really struck me.  So, let's have some fun and see what is available.

Title: 1987 Fleer Baseball Signed Complete Set with Update, including all multi-player cards
Lot #: 486
Description: This complete autographed 1987 Fleer set was obtained mostly in person by a former employee of Major League Baseball Productions, which produced This Week in Baseball. An ambitious project to tackle, 23 years in the making, autographed sets like this do not come along very often. Complete signed sets are almost never seen and are noteworthy for their difficulty in putting together. To attempt to put this set together today would require a significant investment which would be many times the opening bid. All cards have been front-signed in ink by their subjects, with scripting on each card projecting "7-10" quality (averaging "8-9"). The cards themselves are NM-Mint. This lot is loaded with Hall of Famer signatures, star players and difficult to obtain signatures due to a player's reluctance to sign, the player having moved away to a foreign country or the player having passed away since 1987. All cards are signed include completed multiplayer cards.
Opening Price: $900
Current Price: $4,500
My Thoughts: That's a lot of money for a modern set, even if they are all signed.  My guess is that it would now be close to impossible to complete this feat.  I like it, but don't know how I'd display it.  Maybe I'd donate it to the local curiosity museum.

Title: Brooks Robinson Bronzed Trophy Decanter Given to Him by FP Winner Ltd.
Lot #: 557
Description: Nicknamed the "Human Vacuum Cleaner" because of his amazing ability to gobble up everything at the hot corner, Brooks Robinson collected 16 Gold Gloves in his 23 years of MLB service. While his defense was superb, he was also a more than capable player at the plate where he collected 2,800 hits and 268 home runs on his way to Cooperstown. This unique vintage lot features a bronzed trophy decanter presented to him by F.P. Winner Ltd. The trophy sits atop a 7x7 inch base and measures 16 inches tall and includes a nameplate that reads:"Brooks Robinson Born May 18, 1937 Career 1955 to 1977 Hall of Fame August 1983"
Opening Price: $200
Current Price: $250
My Thoughts: I'd have to be a serious Brooks Robinson or Orioles collector to really want this.  But wouldn't it be fun to lean over to your buddy and say, "Want some scotch?" and then rip the head off of old Brooks and pour a tumbler?  I think it would.

Title: Michael Jackson Signed Black Fedora Hat (JSA Full Letter)
Lot #: 816
Description: Widely considered the greatest performer ever, the late, great Michael Jackson is featured in this auction in what will sure to be a must-have item for any fan of the "King of Pop." Jackson (1958-2009) entertained millions from his time as a member of the Jackson 5 through his solo career that included some top-selling albums as "Thriller", "Dangerous" and "Bad". The lot features a version of Jackson's famous black Fedora hat that is signed by the artist along with the inscription "Love" in White Paint Pen. The medium sized unmarked black Fedora is signed under the brim in bold white pen and the autograph comes with a Full LOA from JSA. The inside band of the fedora is also embroidered "MICHAEL JACKSON" in gold. Another version of this fedora, also signed, sold for $50,000 with Julien's Auctions earlier this year. This is the real deal and not one of the many forgeries that can be found on the market.
Opening Price: $6,000
Current Price: $0
My Thoughts: I only added this one in for --David, over at TribeCards.  He's the biggest Michael Jackson fan that I know.  Almost bordering on the creepily excessive.  Almost.  I like some of Michael Jackson's music and I met Michael Boddicker at a NAMM show in LA in the early 1980s.  Michael Boddicker was a keyboardist for Michael Jackson.  My brush with musical greatness.  Bottom line, I wouldn't want the hat.  A bit too creepy for me, but --David might.

Huggins & Scott December Auction Catalog

So, time for another catalog post. I'm sorry to say that this post is coming just after the Huggins & Scott December auction closed.  This week I've had some trouble with our internet service provider (translation: no connectivity for several days at home).

For this catalog I'll select three items that, if I had more funds in my budget, I'd enjoy having in my collection.

Title: 1934-1936 National Chicle Diamond Stars Complete Set of (108) Cards with (10) Graded
Lot #:202
Description: Featured is a seldom-offered 1934-1936 National Chicle Diamond Stars complete set of (108) cards. Headlined by ten professionally graded cards, the vivid “art deco” renderings capture the essence of depression-era baseball.
Opening Price: $900
Ending Price: $2,200
My Thoughts: You can't go wrong with these.  A complete set.  And they're not all graded.  I understand the importance of grading, especially for some older cards.  I think that it is important.  But I'm so glad that there are 98 cards in this lot are not yet imprisoned in plastic. Look at the colors.  Look at the detail in the background.  I just like them.

Title: 1912 L1 Leathers Walter Johnson
Lot #: 225
Description: One of the more unusual ACC designations is found with the 1912 L1 Leather premiums. This seldom-encountered series was originally available as a promotional prize through the Helmar “Turkish Trophies” cigarette brand. The offered 1912 L1 Leather #135 Walter Johnson is essential for the Type collector. Measuring 10x12, the Hall of Fame fireballer (artwork borrowed from the 1911 T3 Turkey Red Cabinets series) is precisely captured on this well-preserved cowhide. Despite horizontal folding and leather stretching, the surface is otherwise detracted only by minor leather abrasions and light soiling. Additionally, the perimeter is mildly affected by wrinkling, while the upper two flaps have been removed. The stamped image is bold, while the blank reverse is unaffected by any significant flaws. An impressive proposition for the tobacco-era enthusiast.
Opening Price: $1,000
Ending Price: $2,000
My Thoughts: Walter Johnson?  Another one you can't go wrong with.  Big enough to appreciate, but not so big that you could use it as a lap blanket.  I'd like to be in the meeting that the marketing guy came up with this.  "Gents, I've got an idea.  Cows are stacking up in Kansas City and Chicago.  We can get a great deal on their hides.  Let's ditch those little bits of cardboard and go with leather.  Who doesn't like leather?"

Title: 1981 Special Olympics/Superman II Program Signed by (14) with Pele & Reeves
Lot #: 877
Description:The offered twenty-eight page program from the 1981 Special Olympics Salute to Superman II features fourteen autographs in blue marker that range from (“8-9”). Highlights include President George Bush, Sr. (“8”), Pele (“8-9”) and Christopher Reeve (d.2004 “8-9”).  Comes with a full photo LOA from JSA.
Opening Price: $200
Ending Price: $300
My Thoughts: I never gave Special Olympics much thought until a few years ago.  In just a few years my daughter Caroline will be eligible to participate in the Special Olympics.  I'm looking forward to it.  I don't remember the specifics of the Superman II movie and I'm not quite sure what the relationship was between the movie and Special Olympics.  I guess everyone needs a hero.  There are some nice autos here, from the worlds of sports, entertainment, and politics.

So, there you go.  Three items from an auction that has already ended.

Huggins and Scott Auction

Time for another auction catalog run through.  This time, Huggins & Scott sent me their latest.  The auction will run on September 29 and 30.  Plenty of time to get a second mortgage.

This catalog contains some interesting items.  It seems that someone is selling their Rogers Hornsby collection.  Lots 47-72 are all Rogers Hornsbys.  Old and modern.  Cards and Relic Cards.  All Rogers, all the time.

So, what am I going to feature?  See if you can find a theme...

July Huggins and Scott Auction Catalog

I received this catalog in the mail on Saturday. I vowed I would do a quick review and highlight before the auction starts on July 28th. I'm two weeks early.

The folks at Huggins & Scott have put together another fine catalog. It is full of a variety of sports, entertainment and general history items.

I've selected five items that interest me, although there are many, many more to choose from.

Title: "Big Six" Christy Mathewson Original Game - Framed
Lot#: 130
Description: Offered is an original 1922 Christy Mathewson "Big Six" game framed to the overall dimensions of 28x39 inches. The graphics are still prominent although slightly faded. The box cover of this Big Six Christy Mathewson Indoor Baseball Game is framed side-by-side with the actual game board with both pieces showing moderate wear and staining. The frame has several screw holes and abrasions, as this seldom-seen relic had hung in Joe Theismann's restaurant. Piroxloid Products out of New York, NY chose wisely by using the great Christian Gentleman as the centerpiece of their product, and the winning bidder can make the same choice by securing this fine piece.
Opening Price: $200
My Thoughts: I like games. Even though this one is framed, it shows that a lot of thought went into the mechanics of the game. I'd probably remove it and try to play. It would be interesting to examine the game and then figure out what the percentages of each possible outcome would be and code it.

Title: 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card Game with Sealed Pack of (100) Cards
Lot #: 124
Description:Featured is an original 1968 Milton Bradley Win-A-Card board game highlighted by a factory sealed pack of (100) cards. The elusive 1968 Milton Bradley set contained baseball, football and hot-rod cards. This assembly depicts baseball players Pappas, Pierce and Stoneman atop three of the 25-card stacks, with a hot-rod card situated on the other. Although not visible, football singles are also possible. These cards grade (NM-MT), barring centering imperfections visible on the four top examples. This jumbo pack may contain coveted cards such as Aaron and Ryan RC along with tougher yellow letter variations. The original board with spinner, box bottom and top (all NM) are included, making for a superlative vintage collaboration between two great American giants, Milton Bradley and Topps.
Opening Bid: $750
My Thoughts: See above. I like games. The cellophane wrapping would be off of those cards in a minute.

Title: 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter Charles Comiskey SGC 50
Lot #: 3
Description: Graded 50 VG-EX 4 by SGC. The pioneering Charles Comiskey is portrayed on the offered 1887 N28 Allen & Ginter keepsake. This mid-grade antique is crease-free, displaying modest corner and edge wear. The checklist reverse has sustained minimal age induced soiling.
Opening Bid: $200
My Thoughts: How can you not love this card? The smile. The cap. The look of optimism. And an original A&G card.

Title: 1921 Wool’s American-Maid Bread Frank Baker (SGC 30)—Only Graded from Set
Lot #: 9
Description: Graded 30 Good 2 by SGC. Presented is a 1921 Wool’s American-Maid Bread Frank “Home Run” Baker Type card. This W551 offshoot is presently the only example to have been judged by the third-party service. The surface projects impressive multi-colored hues, while the reverse is boldly stamped in black ink. A combination of wear including obverse soiling and creasing accounts for the technical grade.
Opening Bid: $150
My Thoughts: I like the fact that this is an image of a Baker on a Bread card.

Title: 1910s Boston Red Sox Porcelain Doll
Lot #: 129
Description: Baseball's juggernaut prior to being felled by the infamous "Curse of the Bambino," the Boston Red Sox were perennial champions before their ill-fated sale of Ruth. During their stellar 1910s decade, appropriate homage was paid to the BoSox in the form of treasures like this vintage doll. Clad in a thin cotton one-piece uniform with "RED SOX" arched across the chest in felt characters, the composite doll stands 13" in height and has a porcelain head and a cotton cap with a felt bill. The body feels to be horsehair or straw stuffed. A crack on the back on the head has been repaired. The uniform shows age-induced discoloration, and the felt lettering has become partially detached with portions of the "E" missing. A unique Carmines heirloom.
Opening Bid: $300
My Thoughts: Chucky's great-grandfather? I don't know that I'd really want to own this, but I found it curious.

I was getting tired of linking to the lots and finding, months later, that all traces of the auction were gone. This way, if the original disappears, I've still got something.
