Buy my Fat Chickens

Another Listia win. A complete set of 1916 John Player Tobacco Co. CRIES OF LONDON (Street Sellers) 2nd Series cards. 25 cards in the set. for the score keepers - it set me back 4,609 credits.

These are about 1-7/16" x 2-11/16" in size. Rather good condition for being 97 years old. I'll scatter more of them in the coming weeks.

The Hobbit - Denny's Trading Cards

A few months ago I won a fun little auction on Listia. It was the 10 base card set of Denny's The Hobbit trading cards. For those keeping score, it was won with a bid of 555 and included free shipping.

I'll share some of them with you.

The adorable Biblo.  The Hobbit.

Gandalf.  Wise savior. Pipeweed smoking fireworks maker.  Magneto.

Gollum.  CGI'ed waif that is in need of Hair Club for Men.

Galadriel.  Elvish eye candy.

Thorin Oakenshield.  Is he a viking or a dwarf?  He seems taller than a dwarf should be.

Dwalin.  According to the back of the card he's one of the tallest dwarves.  Instead of that dagger he looks like he should be carrying this Klingon Batleth.

When the movie came out last year I knew that it reminded me of something.  I thought and thought and then it hit me.  31 years before I'd seen similar characters.

The seller threw in some promo cards, but now I'm on the hunt to find the two special edition gold foiled cards.  Bilbo and Gandalf.  I'll get them in time.

Keeping the Wantlists Up To Date

Last week I received an email from Jason S. asking if my wantlists were up to date.

Ummm, sure?  There might some obscure card I don't know about that isn't on there, but I've done a decent job, at least with the Hershiser cards.

Jason said that he had a 1997 Score Reserve Collection Hershiser that was on my list and that he'd like to mail me the card.  He did just that.  It arrived on Monday.

1997 Score Reserve Collection
Orel Hershiser (card # HR378)
The scan doesn't really show how silvery it is.  Good looking card.  Yeah, I know, he isn't in a Dodger uniform.  More cards for me to collect.  Less cards for Night Owl to collect.

I had to go to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards to see what sort of insert this was.
This was a hobby-only parallel version of Score Series 2, Cards are similar to regular Series 2 Score except for the use of a textured ray-like silver-foil background on front and a Reserve Collection underprint on back. Cards are numbered with an “HR” prefix. Average insertion rate was one per 11 packs.
I asked Jason if he had a blog and what he collected.  He replied that two babies at home and at the present it wasn't really conducive to blogging about the Red Sox cards he collects.

So, there you go.  Keep your wantlists up to date.  You never know when a kind stranger may read them and have a card for you.  Thanks, Jason.

And yes, I've updated my Hershiser wantlist to reflect the new card.  And I've added it to Zistle.
