State of the blog and stuff

So, I came out of the gate at the start of the year like I was riding California Chrome or something.  Well, at least for me.  I really picked it up in March.  I slacked off in April.  Although I posted only 11 times, they weren't really so much about cards, but about the things I was doing.  Sure, card or baseball related, but not focused on cards.  I'm okay with that.

April was a busy month.  My folks came in for a visit, as did my brother and his wife.  We celebrated Caroline's birthday.  We celebrated Easter.  We were busy.  And I haven't yet told you about the meeting I attended with two former members of the 1953 Maryville-Alcoa Twins.  Or the time spent poring over the personal scrapbook of a Major League catcher.  "Who?", you ask.  (Hint: I've been recently looking at his pictures over at Old Knoxville Baseball)

I've gotten a mystery package that I need to show.  And the payout from the Tribe Cards from Outer Space palooza just landed in my mailbox.

Another generous blogger helped me knock off some more of my 1971 Topps wants. I've now collected about 19% of Series One for the 1971 Topps set.  Cards to be shown later.

I picked this up from Listia a bit ago.  I don't remember the details of when or how much and I'm too much of a slacker right now to go hunt down that info.

I gave up a Gary Carter and an Orel Hershiser for this nice bit of Celtic pride.

And since the Throw Back Thursday hashtag seems to be running rampant, let's look back almost four years ago when I created this...

The card.  Not Ryan Zimmerman.  Dorks.

The "State of the blog"?  Doing well.  Thanks.

1991 Sports Illustrated for Kids - Kevin McHale

Another Listia win.  Another 499 Listia credits.  I think I've said this before about the value Listia credits.  I think of them not so much as a cash value, but of a trade value.  I post a fair amount of cards, usually in three card lots.  Stuff I've gathered over time.  Stuff I don't want.  So, when they 'sell' for 499 credits and I find a card that I want for 499 credits it is like a straight up trade to me.

Sports Illustrated for Kids started putting cards in their magazine in January of 1989.  25 years ago.  Since then they've issued about 2,655 numbered cards plus several inserts.

I just found out that Orel Hershiser has a card from the inaugural mini set (card # 5).  Now to add that to the want list.

Clearly this is designed for American youth.  If it was somewhere in the world that cared about the metric system they would have asked: "How tall is Kevin in centimeters?"

For a rather complete checklist of the SI cards visit OddlyQuirky.com's website.  Their other checklist is for track and field type cards.

Kevin McHale - History Class

Another pickup from listia. This time it set me back 258 credits. Free shipping. Not bad for all that shiny goodness.

Similar

I'm getting ready to put in a order with COMC. Gotta get my Fergie before heading off to Birmingham. Wanting to blow more money than I should I started looking at Kevin McHale cards. I noticed these two that are separated by several years but have a similar color scheme.

New (to me) Kevin McHale Cards

More from the post holidays COMC haul.

Take a look at the picture on the right side of the back of the Topps card.  That's what it is supposed to be like here in east Tennessee later today.

More Kevin McHale cards

These are two of the cards that I picked up at Kam's OTW Cards. There were boxes and boxes of dime cards. I selected 25 McHale cards. I was under a self imposed rush to get out of the shop and back with my family, so I got some duplicates.

Kevin McHale (card # 13)

I picked up about four extra cards. Dupes of what I'd already selected. And after I got home and did some sorting, I realized that I only added nine new cards to the rather thin binder.

I already had both of these cards, so up on Listia they went.  I haven't had much luck selling there lately.  I guess I need to put more items up.  That, or nobody wants to buy McHale cards.

One of the nice things about scanning cards is that the output is used in multiple places.  Listia.  Zistle.  Blog.

Still more scanning to be done later.

2012-13 Panini Hoops Kevin McHale

2012-13 Panini Hoops
Kevin McHale (card # 51)

I picked this one up on ebay last week.  I had some 81 cents in ebay bucks that were set to expire.  So, this card made it to my house on Monday, costing me a whopping 19 cents (delivered).

Okay kids, it is very easy to confuse cards.  Not all of them are marked plainly.  The card below is not the card above.

Basketball Time

I'm not a big fan of the NBA. In my opinion the game has grown too self centered and thuggish. The rules aren't being enforced (how many steps can a player take before it is actually called traveling?). I'll watch the finals and I always enjoy the highlights, but watching regular season games? Not so much.

My wife is a fan of the mid-1980s Celtics, particularly Kevin McHale. I started a small collection of his cards. I don't have much more than 30, probably about 25 or so.

Greg, the Night Owl, sent this one over in his last package to my mailbox.

So, in the coming months you'll see some more of one third of the Big Three. He needs a nickname. Any suggestions?
