Let's go racing, boys and girl

Time to go to Daytona. Danica Patrick is the first woman driver to drive from the pole position for the Daytona 500.

Though Rick Carelli is shown in the truck series, he exudes the racing spirit.  Which is, "Please don't let me die on the track."

Rick Carelli (card # 47)

Ah, it will be a fun, long season.  It starts in February and ends in November.  And as far as I know, NASCAR is the only professional sport that allows men and women to directly compete against each other.

Yes, there will be more racing cards this season.  For now, it is time to watch the race.

Repost - Cabinet Size Phototypes of Base Ball Players.

I originally posted this October 12, 2011. Since then it has had 4,749 views. 155 this week. There's nothing in the post to draw those numbers. I think that the spam type sites are pushing traffic this way. I'm always grateful for traffic, but I think that it is traffic that doesn't necessarily want to be here.  So, I'm removing the old post and reposting it.  I've even included the one comment that the original post got.  Maybe that will level things out a bit.

I was poking around the LA84Foundation.org site last evening looking for some info on the Tri-Copper League of Arizona.  I stumbled across this advertisement for what we now know as the W600 series of cards.

Sporting Life - November 23, 1907

Interesting to note that in the above ad, Ty Cobb is listed as Tyrus W. Cobb.  His middle name was Raymond.

New (to me) Baseball Books

On Saturday I took my daughter Caroline on a Daddy Date Day. We went to the Beck Cultural Exchange Center where I was able to get a nice photo of 'Steel Arm' Dickey. I've already passed the image over to Gary Ashwill at agate type.

Then we went to Central Street Books, a nice used bookstore in Knoxville. They are closing and the proprietor has slashed prices. Unfortunately the baseball books are gone.

A quick bite to eat at Burger King, Caroline's favorite fast food joint, and then to another used bookstore in town, McKay Used Books.  Success.  I was able to snag both of these fine specimens for just $1.50 each.

Banana Bats and Ding-Dong Balls

Contents of the bag?  One chocolate iced glazed donut.

We lazily drove home, winding our way through some of the more upscale parts of Knoxville.  It was a good day.

Happy Valentine's Day

I figured that the card blogs would be cluttered with images of:

I guess not.

People are going on and on about the absence of the hit leader's name on Topps' product.

would say,

You think you're cold?

I've been eyeing this card at the local antique/collectibles mall for the last few months.   They had it priced at $5.50. You can see that it is in pretty rough shape.   I thought that it was priced a bit high so I asked what they could do.  It was offered to me for $4.00.   I could get a cleaner copy of it on ebay for that.  But the instant gratification bug was in my brain. I could have it now. So I purchased it.

You can read about The Jeannette on the back of this tobacco card.  If you want to learn the rest of the story, visit the Navy Department Library page.

Wood Brothers Racing

1994 Traks Premium
Wood Brothers (card # 156)

This last Friday Leonard Wood was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Glen Wood was inducted in 2012.  Wood Brothers Racing started in 1950 and is still going.  Trevor Bayne drove their signature 21 car to victory in the 2011 Daytona 500.  It was the Wood Brothers' fifth Daytona 500 win.

Yes, the NASCAR season is starting up.  More cards to come.

Judge Cooper custom card

Jon asked who was going to make a Judge Cooper custom card. I did.  Who's Judge Cooper?  See the Baseball Cards in Court post from earlier this week.

1969 Topps Deckle
Hon. Irving Ben Cooper

Yeah, it was a slap job. I'm not happy with the shade of blue on the signature and this was my second design. I tried a generic card with a modified Topps Rookie trophy cup thingy, but that just didn't ring true. I might tinker with it some more, but I doubt it.

Baseball Cards in Court

Looking through some online newspapers I came across an article about the Curt Flood reserve case in 1970. Here are a few paragraphs from the Reading Eagle on June 14, 1970.

It wasn't only Curt Flood that took the witness stand.  Jackie Robinson and Joe Garagiola also spoke.

Could this be the card that Curt Flood was looking at?

New (to me) Hershiser cards

Here are a few more Herhsiser cards from my post holidays COMC buying binge. Nothing really exciting here, just some classic poses.  Well, I guess he wasn't posing.

And look.  Orel's batting.  If you're going to show a picture of a pitcher batting then post his batting stats.  I'm not sure why the signature is not across his belt.

I tried to play MLB Showdown when it came out, but sort of hard to play with a six year old.  I still have some of the shiny cards.

1969 Milton Bradley Earl Wilson

Another card from generous Daniel of It's like having my own Card Shop.  This has been on my want list for quite some time.  Actually, any card I don't have of Earl Wilson is on my want list, but you know what I mean.  Thanks, Daniel, again.

1969 Milton Bradley
Earl Wilson (card #NNO-294)
I'm not sure how to distinguish the 1969 and the 1972 Milton Bradley cards. From the images that I've seen, the front photo for Earl Wilson is the same. I haven't seen both backs.

I never played the Milton Bradley games. I also never played Strat-O-Matic growing up. I must talk to my parents about denying me those opportunities.
