I was looking through a pack of 1991 Upper Deck a few weeks back. UD was just a few years into their reign as the premier card producer of the junk wax era. They weren't junk wax. At that time they were praised for putting quality photography on cards. But was the best photo always put on the front of the card?
Today we'll be playing "Front or Back?"

1991 Upper Deck
Edgar Martinez (card # 574) |
I'd have to go with Back on Edgar. How many times have you seen a third baseman just waiting for that hit that might come his way?
|
1991 Upper Deck
John Shelby (card # 201) |
The Back, again. In the on-deck circle? Probably during batting practice.
|
1991 Upper Deck
Jose Lind (card # 258) |
Back. Definitely the back. Action on the front, but ACTION on the back.
|
1991 Upper Deck
Keith Miller (card # 196) |
I'll have to with the Back. Nice profile on the front, but the back shows that something has happened.
|
1991 Upper Deck
Kenny Rogers (card # 606) |
Love his chicken. And his stirring ballads. Back wins.
|
1991 Upper Deck
Todd Burns (card # 405) |
Todd Burns? Front! How can he walk with those legs askew?
That's all I've got. Hey, at least I scanned some baseball cards. It was almost a set of racing cards, what with the Sprint All-Star Race Saturday night. You're welcome.
Love the photos on the back of Jose & Edgar. But I have to change gears and comment on the 1991 Upper Deck design. It's one of my favorites from that era and includes the making of a good looking cards: cool border, team logos, and player positions.
ReplyDeleteThey put out some great cards!
ReplyDeleteI've often wondered about Upper Deck cards -- why'd they put that picture on the back?
ReplyDeleteThey didn't call him Leaping Lind for nothing.
ReplyDelete92 Upper Deck #732 Jack Morris,on the flipside, the female interviewer has a great set of legs.
